Bill on X-case Abortion Legislation Defeated.

I’m not pro-abortion.

Abortion isn’t pleasant, either as a concept or as a process. It is not a choice taken lightly. It is an invasive, difficult, and sometimes painful procedure, and it has complex emotional ramifications that are unique to the woman, or couple, who have chosen it. Abortion is not something women choose to undergo on a whim. It is not like popping to the doctor to fill a prescription.

Some people say that women deserve better ...

Guest Post: Why Norris Had To Jump, And Who Pushed Him.

Posted by Lisa McInerney on Tuesday, August 2, 2011, In : Politics
It is with more than a measure of dismay I watched David Norris' presidential campaign fall apart over the last few days. I had been eager to see his name on the ballot paper and thought that he would bring a warm, likeable vigour to the role of our head of state. While I was agonising over how to put into words how I felt about the weekend's revelations, the brilliant Sinéad Keogh saved me the hassle. ~ Lisa

As Joycean scholar David Norris would know, the old Ulysses quote goes that "Suffici...

Well, Whaddya Know?

It’s a new dawn, it’s a new day, it’s a new Dáil, it’s half a shuffle further to the right.

Oh, I don’t know. Perhaps I’m being too cynical. Perhaps these information-overloaded arteries are denying my heart hope. I don’t feel like we’re ramping things up, creating the fairy-tale Ireland 2.0 out of innovation, clarity, and a trimmed and tidy ball sack. I don’t even feel like we’re stripping things down, going back to basics, redefining our nation and selves. We’re turf...

A few of us were sitting around yammering the other day, all high spirits, and some 40% proof ones, too. Conversation turned, naturally, to that very Irish kind of one-upmanship that centres around perceived disadvantage and struggle. Like the Four Yorkshiremen, minus the hard-earned success to validate such shameless, misty-eyed misery.

Mind you, I've heard that during the Celtic Tiger years (mythical and all as they now seem), competition flourished between those who had holiday homes in Sc...

We Are Where We Ain't

Posted by Lisa McInerney on Thursday, January 27, 2011, In : Politics

Ah, pre-election nerves. That volatile time between nailing propaganda posters to every stationary object and the rain washing them away, many months and moons later. As Christmas is the time for break-ups, so the couple of months run up to a general election puts us all in danger of total social meltdown. Harsh words are spat. Brothers turn on brothers. Profitable partnerships are dissolved over contentious sideswipes at Alan Shatter.

Certainly, in my own social sphere, political argument ...

We Are Not Amused

I was told The Most Offensive Joke In The World™ today.

No, I'm not going to repeat it. It wasn't funny. Nor was it supposed to be. To tell The Most Offensive Joke In The World™ on a public space, I'd have to be some sort of attention-whoring, calamitous dick, willing to spew out hateful nonsense just so that people will gasp in my direction, whilst at the same time careful to have some sort of pseudo-sociological excuse - "It's a social experiment!" - ready to cling to when the world ca...
